ToastMasters P5 Speech
Lessons to be learned from Moms
----------------------------------------
A very Good afternoon to all Toastmasters and guests. Wishing you all a very happy belated Mother's day.
As we celebrated Mother's day last Sunday, I thought why not talk on the same context.
Don't worry I am not going to give any emotional speech here. Instead this Mother's day made me think that even as
grown ups, we have still so much to learn from our mothers.
1. Connect with others - Though today we are so much connected on social networking sites, but personally we are
quite disconnected even with our closed ones. How often do we login to facebook to update or check status.
And how often do we actually pick up phone to call some dear friend or pay a personal visit to our friends.
Point to ponder upon dear Toastmasters. On the other hand, if you consider your mother, she doesn't have an
account on facebook but still she is in touch with all her friends and relatives and still she is able to
add new friends to her list. On a typical evening in my society, I see a group of aunties chit-chatting with
each other and if a new aunty wants to join in, she gets joined with so much of ease. On the other hand, if
we plan to go to park, we would make sure to take our ipod with us. And the moment we hit the park, our
playlist has already started playing and we start walking while listening to music without lookin left or right, totally lost in our own world.
When it is so much easy for our moms to make new friends, why it is so difficult for us? Is it our ego? Is it
fear of rejection? Or we are just too lazy to take out time for making new acquaintances. Do you know the greatest
need of any human being is to belong. Every human being needs social acceptance. I feel we should keep this
point in mind and never stop ourself from making new friends. And for old friends, it's always better to
talk on phone and if it's feasible to visit, why not plan some surprise visits. You are definitely going to
make them happy and more than that, its going to make you even more happier.
2. Save Money - It's true we all make sure to save money so that whenever required we should be ready to
tackle circumstances. But being used to monthly income, we also tend to splurge money. It's so common
to visit a mall on a weekend because you couln't think of any other plan and find your hands full of
shopping bags on your exit from mall. The point I am trying to make is we don't think much while
spending money. On the other hand, if you are with your mom in a mall, and you ask your mom. Mom, why
don't you try out that new dress, I'll gift it to you. And you'll find your mom replying, No beta, I
already have so many dresses, I actually don't need it. That is the point dear friends. Whenever we get
the temptation to buy anything, we should spend some time reflecting on whether we actually need it.
It's normal to keep getting temptations for latest electronic gadgets. And most of the times it's because
others are having, we should have it too. Gadgets will keep getting upgraded. Gadget you buy today may
get old fashioned in a couple of months. So this is never going to stop. But we can definitely stop
ourselves on spending unnecessarily.
3. Do what makes you happy - Moms always knows just the right question, “Are you happy?” That’s all she cares about, and that’s her measure of a good life.
More importantly, she thinks everyone owns their own happiness and doesn’t have a right to complain—just do something about it, and definitely, “Don’t whine!”
So next time, you feel low, think about what will turn you on and just do it. And if you cannot decide what makes you happy, ask your mom, she'll definitely
have an answer to it.
4. Try it, you might like it. My Mom always encouraged me to eat my vegetables with, “Try it, you might like it.”
As long as I genuinely tried it with an open mind, she was fine. It’s when I shut my mind to the idea, that she wasn’t happy, “How can you know if you didn’t try it?”
There are so many options that we don't even try just because of false assumption of we might
not like it. We should keep outselves open to try out new things. Things like learning a new foreign language, learning to swim, learning to play any music instrument,
try to read a book that you normally don't read, or creating a blog for yourself. There is no harm in trying, you never know you might discover a new hobby in yourself.
5. If they jumped off a bridge… Just because everybody else does it doesn’t make it right. Don’t be a copy-cat.
As a kid, it was easy to fall into, “monkey see, monkey do”, but my Mom always knew the right question to ask,
“If everybody jumped off the bridge, would you do it too?”
So dear Toastmasters, I just shared some of the lessons that I felt we should learn, remember them through out journey of life and follow them deligently.
It's for our own betterment. We will definitely gain some good experiences by following them and be more content with ourselves. And if you feel
happy from inside, you can spread that happiness to those around you as they say 'Happiness is contagious'.
